Hao Su

Hao Su Trainee (2007-2009)

Career profile: Having joined in September 2007, Hao is currently in the first seat (general corporate) of his training contract at Herbert Smith in Hong Kong, working mainly on IPOs. Hao expects to follow this with seats in the PRC and in litigation, probably finishing up with a client secondment, before qualifying into the firm in 2009.

When Hao Su was a student, Herbert Smith helped him study law in widely differing environments across the world. Now, as a first-seat trainee, Hao has found that the firm is continuing to provide him with a wide array of experiences – confirming that both he and Herbert Smith have made the right choice.

In fact, Hao says the decision to join Herbert Smith was one of the easiest he has ever made. “This firm is definitely recognised as top-tier,” he points out. “But just as importantly, it has long stood out as a far-sighted law firm
with a deep commitment to Asia. It was, after all, the first international law firm here to run a scholarship in mainland China – and that sort of initiative says a lot about the way Herbert Smith views the region.”

Hao knows all about Herbert Smith’s commitment from first-hand experience. After studying law at Peking University, Hao won a
Herbert Smith scholarship which saw him sponsored by the firm through the GDL, a conversion course in the UK. Then it was back to Hong Kong to take the local PCLL, a professional legal education programme for intending lawyers. He joined the firm in September 2007 and, since then, has been hugely impressed by the working environment.

“Of course, these are major deals and the work here is very challenging and demanding,” he says. “But everyone here is extremely approachable – you can be sure of getting a lot of support when you need it and partners and senior associates are always happy to stop for a chat. I know that, whenever I need it, there will be detailed feedback on my performance and that’s a major encouragement when you’re starting out.”

Working on time-pressured IPOs is hard work – but rewarding. And, since joining, Hao has already learnt a great deal about what it means to be a corporate lawyer: “A key thing,” he laughs, “is to enjoy your work. But, as importantly, I’ve discovered how important
it is to be ‘data-hungry’ – information is all important
and it’s vital to be exhaustive in your research. Because of the varied responsibilities and tasks that are assigned to me, I’ve had to become an expert at time-management – but the firm has also made me remember that work isn’t everything in life. They’ve really helped me to keep a healthy balance.”

Part of that balance has included Hao getting actively involved in various charitable events organised by the firm, such as taking part in the Matilda Sedan Chair Race and helping with the Trainee Revue for the Christmas party. He sums up: “So far, everything about my time here at Herbert Smith has exceeded my expectations. It’s a great place to work and the people here make sure that it’s always enjoyable.”
