I wanted to come to London for the obvious reasons; a few years to experience the fantastic travel opportunities with Europe on your doorstep.
But finding the right professional opportunity was also a big factor - having worked for a top Australian firm, I wanted to join somewhere of a similar calibre here in London .
Herbert Smith gave me the chance to do a variety of high quality corporate work - it doesn’t compartmentalise its corporate practice like some other firms. It’s ticked all the boxes I had in mind - bigger transactions, more variety, challenging and quality deals, all the while building on the skills and expertise I had already gained in my five years of working in Australia .
I have to admit that the sheer size of Herbert Smith did make me think there might be a more impersonal work environment with a ‘sink or swim’ mentality. I needn’t have worried. I’ve certainly been encouraged to take the lead on deals, which is challenging and great for my development, but I’ve never felt that support is lacking if needed.
I had the chance to speak with several partners and associates during the recruitment process which certainly helped in making my decision to join. I think it is important to talk to as many of your potential future workmates as you can, so that you can be comfortable that both the firm and the personalities of the people you will work with are the right ‘fit’ for you. Importantly, I've never felt like I am treated as a ‘temporary’ member of the group - my own skills development and career progression is fostered and encouraged in the same way as any other associate in the group.
