The summer internship

The internship will run from Monday 24 November to Friday 19 December. During the programme you will undertake two rotations within different departments in the firm.

Once you have been offered a place, you can let us know your preference as to where you would like to spend your time. We will fund your flights to and from the UK, organise your working visa and accommodation covering all the costs and also pay you a salary of £275 at the end of each week of the internship.

During the programme you will sit in the same room as a partner or senior associate and be given real work for real clients. In addition, you will be involved in workshops and presentations that provide an insight into the breadth of practice areas in the firm.

Formal and informal social events are arranged for you to meet others on the scheme as well as partners, associates and trainees. By the end, you should have a good idea of whether law is the career for you - and whether that career might be at Herbert Smith.

Applications

We are looking for exceptional Australian students who are performing at the highest academic level at their university.

Applications for the 2008 Australian internship have now closed. Applications for 2009 will open in March 2009.

If your application is successful, you will be interviewed by two partners during May. You will be asked to review a short business case study and the interview will be based around both your analysis of this exercise and key competencies we feel make successful solicitors.

The Training Programme

During your summer internship you will be guaranteed an interview for a place on the training programme (similar to that followed by EU students). If you decide to apply and are successful, you can then complete your degree and we will also support you through law school in Australia. Prior to starting your two year training programme you will take the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) and on completing your training you will be able to practise in either jurisdiction.

As a graduate trainee you'll be one of the team, working directly on deals and cases for some of the biggest companies in the world. And you'll be working and training alongside some of the world's best lawyers.

During your two-year training programme you will rotate around four seats of six months each, spending time in corporate and litigation as well as more specialist areas. At least one could be on secondment to a client such as IBM or Coca-Cola, where you would work as a resident lawyer.

Many graduate trainees travel on business at some point in their training contract, and our approach is that you go where the cases and deals require you to go.
