Herbert Smith is the only UK headquartered international firm with a real team of experienced senior lawyers practicing as international counsel based permanently in Jakarta. The combined Herbert Smith and HBT team of partners and more than 50 lawyers work together on both corporate and financial transactions and disputes and contentious Indonesian regulatory matters, protecting international client interests.
HBT is one of the leading commercial and corporate law firms in Indonesia. HBT also has a specialised disputes practice focusing on representing the interests of foreign investors and financial institutions who become involved in contentious and regulatory issues. The firm provides high quality, innovative legal services to an international standard, based on informed and commercially relevant local knowledge.
HBT has seven Indonesian partners, who work alongside Herbert Smith partners David Dawborn and Brian Scott. David and Brian are on long-term secondment to HBT and between them, the two have clocked up over 25 years in the region.
The Jakarta team is also supported by a group of additional Herbert Smith lawyers based in Herbert Smith’s Singapore office, who are dedicated to Indonesian transactions. We believe that having senior international lawyers based full time in Jakarta who are experienced in the market, is an important part of servicing the needs of international clients in Indonesian matters. These lawyers work closely with HBT's Indonesian lawyers to ensure our clients receive an international standard and benefit from local insight on Indonesian legal matters. Our clients benefit from the highly experienced seamless combination of HBT and Herbert Smith acting together.
HBT also works closely with Herbert Smith’s other Asian offices, including Herbert Smith Tokyo in representing the many large investments and business interests of Japanese corporates in Indonesia. Increasingly, HBT also works with other Herbert Smith offices in the UK, Russia and Europe. Our association provides both HBT and our clients with access to Herbert Smith's global resources and support network.
HBT provides legal services across all aspects of Indonesian commercial and corporate law, with particular expertise in the following areas:
- mergers and acquisitions
- corporate and business structuring
- banking and finance and debt restructurings

"They're the only show in town really, because what you've got is English-qualified lawyers bringing international-standard legal advice to clients in the Indonesian market, which is quite rare," comments one client. "We get the perfect mix of legal advice combined with a commercial perspective on how those laws are applied in practice."
IFLR 1000, 2009
"High praise is reserved for the team at Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung, clients stating that 'David Dawborn is an invaluable recourse; his experience as a foreign lawyer working in Indonesia is without parallel’… Partners Iril Hiswara and Sakurayuki and International counsel Brian Scott are also recommended."
