Herbert Smith wins Debt Market Deal of the Year and Energy & Resources Deal of the Year

02 May 2008

Herbert Smith has won Debt Market Deal of the Year and Energy & Resources Deal of the Year at the Asian Legal Business (ALB) China Law Awards.

The ALB China Law Awards, which are among the most prestigious of legal awards, were held at the Westin Shanghai Hotel last Friday. The award recognises and promotes outstanding professional achievement and some of the best legal work of the year throughout China.

The awards acknowledge Herbert Smith's advice on the Sinopec convertible bond offering. Herbert Smith advised China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), one of the largest integrated energy and chemical companies in China, on a HK$11.7 billion (US$1.5 billion) zero coupon convertible bond offering. Herbert Smith advised on both the English and Hong Kong law aspects of the transaction. The team was led by corporate partners Tom Chau and John Moore in Hong Kong. They were assisted by Jenny Iong, May Ju, Yeo Boon Teck, Margie Chan and Richard Yip.

The awards also recognise our work on the oil refinery assets acquisition for Sinopec. Herbert Smith advised Sinopec and its wholly owned subsidiary Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical on the RMB3659 million (US$504 million) acquisition of oil refinery assets from Sinopec Group Company. The team was led by corporate partner Tom Chau, senior associate Jason Sung and associate May Ju.

John Moore commented:

"This award further demonstrates the strength of our debt and equity-linked capital markets practice in Asia, an area where we have developed specialist expertise and one with significant growth potential across the entire region."

Tom Chau commented:

"It is an honour to receive this award from ALB and to have been instructed by Sinopec. Sinopec is our long term client where we first acted for it in its tri-listing in 1999. The China Law Awards acknowledge the excellent work delivered by our China corporate team. This once again demonstrates our commitment to the M&A practice in the region."
