Herbert Smith grows Moscow office with finance hire

24 October 2008

Herbert Smith has hired Ed Baring as a partner in its Moscow office. Ed previously worked at Allen & Overy, where he was a senior associate in the firm's Moscow office.

Ed's experience encompasses bank lending, trade, acquisition and real estate finance and securitisation. He advises a range of the most active banks in the Russian loan markets. Ed is currently rated as a leading individual in the Russian banking market by Chambers Global, Chambers Europe and IFLR 1000.

The addition of Ed brings the number of partners in Moscow to nine, following the hire in September this year of Evgeny Zelensky, previously one of Renaissance Capital's most senior in-house lawyers, and the hires in mid-2007 of Oleg Konnov and Alexei Roudiak from Salans.

Ed will work alongside Alexander Currie, who has a broad finance practice including in particular project finance, and will also work closely with John Balsdon, who maintains a strong Russian client base and divides his time between London and Moscow.

Allen Hanen, managing partner of the Moscow office, commented:

"Russia has one of the most dynamic economies in the world and has seen a decade of enormous growth.  It also has shown over time that it has one of the largest syndicated loan markets. Ed will be a valuable addition to our finance practice in Moscow as we seek to grow our share of loan-related work.  Ed joining us in Moscow as a partner shows that notwithstanding current market volatility we continue to take a long term strategic view on the development of the Russian market."
