Herbert Smith named M&A Team of the Year at The British Legal Awards
30 November 2007
Herbert Smith's corporate division received further market recognition this week at The British Legal Awards where it won M&A Team of the Year. The award was given in acknowledgement of the firm's performance over the last 12 months in areas such as winning new business and technical innovation.
Standout M&A transactions include advising:
- Resolution Life on its proposed £8.6 billion merger with Friends Provident, £4.9 billion recommended takeover by Standard Life and £5 billion recommended takeover by Pearl Group
- Tata Steel on its successful £6.2 billion takeover of Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus
- The leading international investment banks providing the £11 billion equity bridge on KKR/Pessina's offer for Alliance Boots
The British Legal Awards, organised by Legal Week, are unusual as they are judged by an independent panel made up of leading names from the profession. The judges include the likes of Anthony Salz of Rothschild (former senior partner of Freshfields) and Terry Miller of The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (former Managing Director & International General Counsel of Goldman Sachs).
This is the third major award Herbert Smith's corporate division has won this year. In March it was named ECM Team of the Year at IFLR's Asian Awards and in June it won Corporate Team of the Year at The Lawyer Awards.
Michael Walter, head of corporate, commented:
"This award is further evidence of the standing of our M&A practice in the market and a fitting tribute to the extremely talented team we have here in corporate. It is particularly pleasing to have been given this award by such an eminent panel of judges, many of whom are our clients."
