Andrew Calderwood

Andrew Calderwood is a partner specialising in the development and financing of major projects. He qualified as a solicitor in 1983 and was admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong in 1985.  In 1991 he was seconded to the firm's Hong Kong office where he headed the international finance and banking group, with responsibility for projects on which the firm was advising in China, Malaysia and Hong Kong. In 1995 he established, and was managing partner of, the firm's new office in Singapore, from where he specialised in project development and finance in South East Asia and India. In 1998 he returned to Herbert Smith's London office, since when he has advised on major international energy and infrastructure projects.

Credentials

  • Sumitomo Chemical on the financing (JBIC, commercial bank and Islamic) of the US$10 billion Rabigh refinery and petrochemical complex
  • Sumitomo Chemical on the US$1 billion financing of the independent water, steam and power plant at the Rabigh complex
  • Infra on the development and bond financing of the Disi Mudawarra-Amman water conveyance project in Jordan
  • London & Continental Railways in relation to the financing for both sections 1 and 2 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link
  • European Investment Bank in connection with the €1.15 billion financing made available to the concessionaire to design, build, operate and maintain part of the IP5 (Beiras Litoral e Alta) motorway in Portugal
  • Petronas and the other sponsors and project companies on the US$777 million and US$410 million financings for an extension to an existing LNG train and a new LNG train in Malaysia
