David Willis

David is managing partner of Herbert Smith. In this role he chairs the firm's Executive Committee, concentrating on implementation of Herbert Smith's strategy.

Prior to becoming managing partner in April 2008 he held a number of senior management positions, including his role as head of Herbert Smith's Asia operations (1997-2001) and more recently head of the firm's Financial Institutions Group.

David joined Herbert Smith in 1981 and became a partner in 1989.  Before he went to Hong Kong David advised on a series of major privatisations in the UK, including those in the electricity and coal sectors. 

He recently advised the UK Government on the restructuring of British Nuclear Fuels plc and the establishing of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

  • Resolution on its proposed £8.6 billion merger with Friends Provident, £4.9 billion recommended takeover by Standard Life and £5 billion recommended takeover by Pearl Group
  • BAT Industries in relation to the reorganisation to separate its tobacco and financial services business and subsequent merger of the latter with Zurich Insurance
  • HHG on its demerger from AMP
  • Co-operative Financial Services on the restructuring of Co-operative Insurance Society involving the separation of its long term and general business by the creation and authorisation of CIS General Insurance and the creation of a service company CFS Management Services
  • Great West Life on the UK and EU aspects of its agreed takeover of Canada Life
  • UK Government and Nuclear Decommissioning Authority on the sale of Westinghouse by British Nuclear Fuels to Toshiba for US$5.4 billion
